Question: What is going on in this picture and where is it taking place?

Answer: This picture show a camera team from the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company filming the Jim Jeffries-Tom Sharkey world heavyweight boxing title bout in Coney Island, New York on November 3, 1899. You can find an account of the fight in the Wikipedia entry for Sharkey.

The Biomax Films restoration project has an interesting history of American Mutosocope and Biograph (later simply “American Biograph”) on its website.

Hey UHallers! It’s time for another year at UHall and another year on the blog. We’ve got a crazy new staff on hand (head over here to check us out!) who are planning some programs that are sure to be awesome.

For now though, Welcome Week: it’s not just for Freshmen! We’ve got some great stuff happening around UHall, and NYU has come up with the usual slew of amazing day and night programs. Check out below for the highlights.

If you’re a resident of UHall this year, we hope that you’ll make it a point of stopping by the blog on a regular basis and contributing comments and even content. The blog will offer a wealth of information about events at UHall, at NYU, and around the city. You’ll also find weekly contests and will be able to sign up for many of the programs offered by the RAs and the Faculty Fellows-in-Residence (FFIRs). FFIR DVD Survey Number One

UPDATE: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT!

The UHall Resource Center lends out DVDs to residents of the building. Over the summer, your RAs looked over the selection of films that are currently available and made suggestions about DVDs that should be added to the library. (The “Rentals” link above lists DVDs, video games, and board games that are available at the front desk.)

The UHall Faculty Fellows want to know which of these films appeal to you the most. We will buy your top FIVE choices. And two lucky respondents will each receive one DVD of their choice from the list.

The survey closes at noon on Labor Day. Here are the films that have been nominated:
